A Twist on Idealism

I know some of you are taking Dr. Shelledy's class on the New Materialism. Like the old materialism (realism) back at least as far as Hume, much of what materialism, any materialism does, is oppose idealism. Often, the implied argument is that idealism is simply primitive, religious or superstitious wish fulfillment. Bostrom's article "Are You Living in a Simulation?" breaths new life into that idea that there is a really real behind the merely real. Idealism rises from the ashes.

Here’s a great video from Anfernee on Simulation Theory that does a better job of explaining the concept than I could: https://youtu.be/3d9i_0Ty7Cg (Thanks, Anfernee!)

Link to the article “Are You Living In a Simulation?”  by Nick Bostrom that started the whole thing: https://www.simulation-argument.com/simulation.html

  1. A twist of idealism. I watched the video from Afernee on simulation theory, and it was a bit too out there. I don’t agree that we are living in a simulation life. My perception of reality is exactly that! Identity will lose its perception in any simulation.

  2. I understand your dislike of the idea of living in a simulation. A lot of people share your reaction. I'd recommend your read Bostrom's article. It goes much more in depth than the video. His main point is simple: how would be know?
