I've been looking for some readings in social psychology that touch on our topic. If, like me, you've spent some time googling "digital identity" you've discovered that you're going to be taken to sites on identity security online. Not exactly what we're looking for. (By the way, I suggest searching in google scholar.)
I found this article (link below) interesting. Gergen briefly talks about identity in its historical and philosophical context before talking about social identity in the 21st Century, and how technology is fueling the conceptualization of identity as social rather than individual.
