Summary:
Gill, Zampini, Mehta discuss on how it is important to maintain and develop a digital identity. They studied how patients use the internet to search for doctors and health care providers. They said information found is mixed. There are third party sites that create profiles of the doctors and self-controlled sites. They found that the way doctors present themselves has always been important but the internet has brought up new issues. They responded to this new technology by writing articles with real life examples of unprofessional behavior online. This had led some to believe that they should abstain from social media altogether. Yet that is getting harder to do because with these third party sites that create profiles of doctors and health care providers. They do it without the doctors knowing. These companies create profiles with information out there and patients can leave reviews. So the American Urological Association decided to face the problem by doing research and publishing this research. They found that 97% of consumers look for local businesses online. This includes doctors.
Doctors should keep the information on the internet accurate and they should control it. They also found that 20% of patients look at website reviews for doctors and treatment. They found it important to control your digital information because the doctors can control information found. In this article, they provide a framework do this. First, decide how to separate professional and personal sites. If the information is suited for peer networking then being discovered on the web then it belong on the personal site. Under available platforms they state that the hospital online profile is good place to start. They could also link their personal website and google+. If you do this then safety features so personal information such as private phone or home information wont be shared. Also check to make sure your site can be discovered. That just like a cv, this website should stay updated. You can also include academic work, presentations and publication to increase being discovered. You can also use twitter or YouTube to educate your patients about topics related to the type of doctor you are. The stomach dr that did my colonoscopy asked me to follow them on facebook. They share information in videos about colon cancer.
Response:
Even though this article is about doctors the information can be applied to the academic world or even the personal world. When I decided to self publish my own book of essays I created my own website. It about my writing and a personal blog on different pages. I also reviewed work for other classmates in my MA English program who had also self-published. One of my professors from that program also had website she shared with us. She posted about her academic writing and personal publications. When we where in college they told us to be careful what you post on the internet. Our campus activities director showed us a real life example of a photo she personally deleted off of myspace. When deleting it, she received an email saying in 24 to 48 hours it would be deleted. But 2 days later we couldn’t find the photo in the album of personal pages but if you had bookmarked the exact link of the photo. It was still up. So like she taught us once you publish something it not deleted. Now anyone can post anything about anyone. That information that may be posted may not always be true but if you have your own website you have some control of what can be found.
