Summary:
Fletcher starts his article by dating us back to BC to inform us about the Greeks and their ways of gathering socially and discussing important topics of each of these philosophers, physicians, lawyers, playwrights, etc. These social gatherings held in Plato's Symposium were apparently very similar to TED Talks we have today. Fletcher then points out that these TED Talks are available to anyone who has a computer. Anyone who wants to listen to TED Talks can simply type a keyword on Google, and hundreds of videos will pop up. He emphasizes that one of the major topics of TED Talks is Education. Fletcher also points out that it is important to recognize the extraordinary amounts of lengths people will go to avoid ignorance or to pass on education and educate one another. He talks about creativity, about innovative ideas, about research, decisions, learning developments, school programs, philanthropy, architect, and enterprise. Each of these topics, and many more, are all addressed through TED Talks. The fact that our world allows us to share and spread innovative topics and ideas that we share in common as human beings fascinates Fletcher.
Response:
Honestly, it fascinates me too. I am so thankful for TED Talks because I personally am a huge fan. I am even the sponsor for the TED Talk Club at the middle school I teach at. I think it's great that we are all able to share important ideas and information that helps us grow and develop ideas that improve our world. I think TED Talks are underrated and should definitely be shared in the classroom to the students. TED Talks, as Fletcher mentions, really encompass a broad range of topics that we can all use to enlighten our students as learners and spark that curiosity in them.

Sophia,
ReplyDeleteI find it amazing that you sponsor a TED Talks Club at your campus! I, too, am a big fan and utilize TED Talks in my classroom (7th Grade ELA). Students should be aware that there is a community of learners that pursue knowledge through these TED Talks.
There is actually a TED Talk that explains “The Birth of Wikipedia.” Since our final for this course will be to create a Wikipedia page, I believe it is worth a listen.
