For the collaborative website, I'd like for the audience to be composition teachers. My particular area of research was multimodal composition and students' digital literacy practices. Much of my research focused on how teachers can use students' existing knowledge of technology and rhetorical conventions to create a non-liner composition or a digital project. I think that the findings of my research are meaningful because teachers will have knowledge of how to integrate students' digital knowledge into their pedagogical practices. Maybe not all schools have sufficient funding to support digital composing practices, but I'd like to see some educators attempt to embrace digital writing. Ultimately, I'd like for teachers to visit this site and have a better understanding of how to embrace digital composing practices.
ReplyDeleteKarina,
DeleteThat's great! we have a lot of teachers and future teachers that could benefit from a collaborative website. Especially becuase digital age is something that we are seeing more in education.
I think our suggested audiences go hand in hand. I felt like students would benefit from this greatly. Understanding digital media and its effect on society and identity is something that is very important. For teachers, they must know how to teach it if they want their students to truly benefit. Great suggestion!
DeleteThis is an amazing idea since the topic of digital literacy and identity as well as rhetoric goes hand-to-hand since there are older generations who kind of go against the idea of integrating technology into our day-to-day activities.
DeleteGreat idea Karina!
Karina,
DeleteI, too, feel that an instrumental audience to have would be one that consisted of educators. They play such a pivotal role in individuals’ lives, and what better way to spread the knowledge we have gained in this course, than with an audience that is wide-reaching. Teachers would be able to facilitate and foster digital literacy practices that would enrich the understanding and creation of one’s digital identity.
Wonderful idea!
This is a great idea! And is who I had in mind as well. I do like the multimodal approach you emphasize on. I did a project last semester that too focused on this approach.

ReplyDeleteI too believe the site should consider educators its main audience. In the past, most teachers have had the ability to witness most if not all aspects of identity building (specifically for students older than the early stages of development) because pre-technology social interactions were not much different from social interactions within the classroom setting. And, because accepted knowledge states older children shift away from family life and home culture for identity creation towards interaction with friends and peers, considering classroom room interaction as representative of student experience can no longer be said to be a best practice.
ReplyDeleteNow, student interactions consist in great amount of exchanges within a digital sphere. The implications for future society involve identities of online readerships that do not lend themselves to regional identification. Instead, the identities created are a result of the exposure to myriad influences across an anonymous platform. The effect on educators is the need for broadening curriculum expectations and allowances to include the over-abundance of informational exposure available in the digital sphere. So, gearing the site as an educator’s resource may need to be the main focu.
Educators investing time with digital age professional development would be a great idea.
DeleteThe audience that I believe would most benefit from our site are those who are having identity issues. It’s normal to question your identity in this society where identities are multiplying and changing.
ReplyDeleteI’d say that they should use this site because it’s important for people to realize that it’s okay to be different. As I’ve said before, identity is a vast idea that has many layers to it. It is not something that can be put into one simple word because that isn’t the case. We all have more than one aspect that makes up who we are. It is also a site that when really looked into, they’ll find that different is normal. With this, people’s self-confidence will go up and that in my opinion is one of the most important things we need to do for people.
Priscilla,
DeleteI believe that there are a lot of people who do have an identity problem. Especially when the identity digital age is always having some kind of impact on us. I like to to compare identity to an onion, an onion has many layers before you get to the inner skin.
I like your idea a lot. I think that people don't realize all the amenities that technology holds and the welcoming community that some websites and forums could be. Someone with identity issues would definitely benefit from maybe a blog or forum that has a group of people with similar issues. Having that shared experience creates a positive reaction already. From there, people across the world could help to build each other up and take pride in their differences.
DeletePriscilla, this is something I hadn't thought of and your chosen audience is important ultimately because we all collectively are trying to figure our what IDA means to all sorts of people that belong to different cultures and sub cultures, great point!
DeleteMy target audience is people that are looking for work and are having a hard time building their resume. People who want to manage their job search by building or concise their search. This site will help them focus on the job search target. Also, they will gain experience by getting familiar with the field of their experience.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth,
DeleteThis is a great audience choice! When building a resume it's important to know about the job you're applying to. Having this background knowledge would definitely help someone who is looking for work in this field.
I think that the younger generation would definitely benefit form looking through our website because they will hopefully understand and acknowledge the power that digital technology holds over their identities. For me, I think that upper high school students could benefit, as well as first year or second year college students. I say this because individuals are still very impressionable and figuring out who they are becoming. In addition, these individuals are our future. Should we not help them become independent thinkers who don’t allow the majority or for those in authoritative positions to persuade them to be something less than they are? Moreover, the younger generation is the digital generation. They are growing up with technology. Cell phones, laptops, etc. are not these foreign concepts to them but things that have been around since they were born. They are the technologically savvy ones. So that is why I think it is extremely important to educate the youth on digital identities and the ways in which they develop, are changed, persuaded, marginalized, etc. Showing the youth that they have a voice and that they have autonomy will be an empowering experience that will lead them towards a higher potential. They have to understand the effects that digital media has on them and the power they hold in their hands.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered what the tech savvy generation will think about the analog generation dictating how digital identity is formed? As I was reading your contribution, it occurred to me that most of contributing have likely already had a majority of our identity formed. But, if younger students sift through our work, do we then shift away from explication towards persuasion?
DeleteWell, if structured correctly, I think that it would actually be very successful. The analog generation has seen both sides. The way identity has been affected without any or much digital media and then witnessing how identity has been affected. These two sides lived through one generation acts as living proof of what we have to say about it. For the youth, they don't really know how identity is without digital media so they can't really see things from any other perspective. And we wouldn't be dictating how digital identity is formed. We would simply be educating the ways in which it is affected, created, changed, etc. We aren't really trying to persuade them of how identity is formed. If anything, we are helping them realize or take notice of the ways it is formed. Like us in this class, we hadn't realized a lot of things until we actually sit down and thought about it or read something on it. We weren't persuaded; a light was just kind of turned on--but it was always there.
DeleteRebecca,
DeleteI really how you put this into perspective since there are so many educators who are resisting in the technological advancement in our education and in a way we are restraining today's youth in their identities because in their free time they are engaging in their digital lives and by educators resisting this idea it harms the students in the long way especially in college and when they are trying to get a job since today's society is technology related and there has to have some knowledge in terms of use of technology and digital literacy.
Great job Rebecca!

ReplyDeleteFor my area of expertise I would like people who want to acquire the English language to access my site since it emphasizes the use of technology in order to not only acquire the English language but learn information along the way. Moreover, another audience would be ESL and prospective ESL teachers or any other teacher who works at such high population of English learners my website would include countless resources in order to facilitate the students' acquisition of the English language as well as maximizing learning from a content they are learning.
ReplyDeleteIn the United States there is a huge diverse culture compared to other countries due to the fact that we are fortunate to be called the melting pot country and even though that comes with many benefits one thing that we are struggling today is that we are receiving more English learners. Unfortunately, there is a lack of ESL teachers and training and it would continue to be until this current political climate ends (Trump Administration). This is why I feel compelled in encouraging people into learning about teacher ESL in their schools whether it is elementary all the way to adults we need to embrace that melting pot culture that this country has created, and not allow it to be destroyed with our current political climate.
I love that you are keeping our English Second Language learners in mind. I feel they would be a great asset to include because they are such an integral part of our community especially in the Rio Grande Valley.
DeleteErix,
DeleteI like the audience you have in mind! I hadn't even thought about this audience! It's a great choice and someone who is learning English as a second language is usually coming to the US for the first time.
Learning about identity through our amazing ideas would be great for this audience because they'll be able to get an idea as to what identity is. Hopefully, they'll see that their identity is not something that is "viewed positively upon" rather, we make our own identities and they are all okay no matter what.
I think the appropriate audience for the collaborative class website would be anyone who is researching about identity or any user of the internet. I am sure that after reading our posts and comments, the audience will definitely get a better perspective of what the term identity means and what role it plays in their own personal lives.
ReplyDeleteAs for my website for my subtopic, TED Talks and the identity of a curious learner, I would gear it towards anyone who is interested in public speaking, and anyone who considers themselves a lifelong learner.
I agree. I feel like we have a well rounded website that contains different theories, understandings, and information. This could also be a good site for something who is course about identity in general.
DeleteI believe this site would be great for people who are attempting to understand Digital Identity is a variety of forms. We have different research areas and different understands, as well as information, revolving different forms of social identity.
ReplyDeleteIt could also be a go to page for people who are looking to different research methods that were used to understand the connections and associations with the users and their social spaces. There are many servery done in different domains that have both good and growing results. Others can also add to the questions and research we have done.
For me, my target audience would be professors, students, and anyone interested in discovering a nuanced aspect of IDA. We all as a class have chosen topics that I find equally important for various reasons and that might draw in all sorts of people. Since I am focusing my sub area around Kairos, memes and political activism more or less, those that are particularly interested in these topics will be my targeted audience which more than likely includes rhetoric and composition teachers and students.
ReplyDeleteThe audience I would like to target for the use of my site would probably be parents. It might because I'm a teacher who services at community where the parent involvement is not as abundant as what one would like. The site would be easy to use so that the parents would feel successful. They would also be able to create dialogue within each other. The academic aspect of school parents will step back and many times feel it is the teacher's responsibility. I feel with a site in which avatars are incorporated will attract the parents even have there children guide them.
ReplyDeleteI would like to target the next generation, such as my students. Time and time again I hear students talk about what another student shares on social media and sometimes their reactions are probably not what they should be. (Well duh! They're living in the moment!) I would like my students to realize the impact the digital world has on us and how it can shape a perspective others view them by. I would also like for them to visit because I feel like they are the most vulnerable at their age because they are trying to figure who they are and reading about digital identity as a way people perceive them both at the moment and for years to come is extremely important for their futures.
ReplyDeleteI would hope digital identity along with netiquette becomes an elective or a essential rhetoric course taught in K-12 technology courses. Only because the future is so heavily involving the cyber world. I heard a story on the radio of how teenagers hesitate to call a 1800-suicide prevention hotline however, feel at ease when texting for help.
ReplyDeleteAs Rachel mentioned, it could be a platform or source for people who are looking to different research methods — i.e., all the digital identity categories and subcategories we each focused on in the span of this summer course.
If we include the Born digital book under the resources section, that can help young people. The book discusses how young people may think they are safe online but at the same time share to much information. This book shares good examples of how this information can be spread through out the internet and harm us. It would also be great resources for disabled people they can learn more about idenity and how the internet can help then to live with their disability.
ReplyDeleteSince my main focus of my research of digital identity was with issues dealing with feminism and gender, I would say the audience would be anyone concerned with defining and exploring the way the digital world shapes and affect identity, specifically feminist identity. It would be for people wanting to learn more about the issues that are relevant to women navigating the Internet. Also, obviously it would be for anyone else interested in the sub-categories that my classmates researched. Overall, I would say that since the topic is so wide it will appeal to many different audiences. I could definitely see researchers, educators, and individuals interested in technology using this site.
