Murray, Janet Horowitz. “Chapter 3 From Additive to Expressive Form.” Hamlet on the Holodeck, New York: Free Press, 1997, pp. 65–94.
Janet Murray analysis and compares the media of this century with the one of 1895. She describes the Film scholars and the “arrival of a Train at a La Ciotat Station” by the Lumiere brothers. She mentions the invention of the cameras and how the close-ups. Also, the photoplays that took place she states that this was added to improve photoplay. After a long journey, the arrival of a motion picture camera came aboard. Then computers, search engines, global internet and the process of texting and images, sounds and moving pictures. It is all process in the control of a laptop display or a hundred-foot screen or as small as a mobile phone. She also mentions the four essential properties of the digital environment. The first two are the “interactive” the other two are the “digital” which covers a lot of what we see now in cyberspace which we know as three-dimensional images that appealing to the user.
I think that it is amazing how deep and far the technology (computer, identity in a digital age) is reshaping our lives. I believe this one of the most fabulous book to comprehend the history of how far knowledge has immersed through history and directed us to change. I learned that narrative films were initially called photoplays to spice the art form. Furthermore, I believe that Janet Murray through the reading of Hamlet on the Holodeck, she wants us to current belief in storytelling beyond regular games that people play furthermore, to have a palpable imaginary world we live in. Now, I do not believe that some of the rules that the games are based are real. I do agree that in the discovery made by Joseph Weizenbaum, a professor of computer science at MIT invented a computer program called Eliza made a revolutionary intake for what we know now such as Alexa, Google, ( voice command and interchange), etc. Also, it has changed my way of thinking about viewing games.
