Day 6 Wednesday 8/15. Looking back at Days 1-5, what’s missing? What’s left to do or think about for our site design? Your job is to think of 1 or 2 areas that we should add or build out and explain why & comment on your peers’ posts to generate discussion.

  1. I think that when building our site, we should add more information on how identities work. We do a great job talking about the different aspects of identity, but I think we should go further into the word itself.

It would be cool to see where the idea of identity even came from in the first place. How far back does identity really date? I believe a very crucial question that I don’t think we have asked ourselves (correct me if I’m wrong) is why identity is so important in the first place. Who decided that us being so different was good or bad? Why couldn’t we just live our lives not caring about people’s differences?

It’s important to ask these questions and be able to answer them so that we can really get a background on identity. After all, it is crucial to any topic that we are learning that we know the foundation of it first.

    1. Priscilla,

Thats a great idea, to know the history of identity. that will be really interesting.

    2. I loved your post. I think that we must establish why it’s important in the first place if we are going to spend so much time talking about it. Right away, I think of novels such as 1984, The Giver, Anthem, and such that kind of establish why it’s important. Maybe quotes or short videos on that could be included to give some insight from famous authors of the past.

    3. Priscilla,
I agree that we do need more discussion of how identities work and to discuss the origins of identity, especially as they relate to the ways we relate to technology.

    4. As Priscilla said, I think we can agree defining terms is a basic requirement of the site. I think a timeline of the origins of the idea of identity, how it has shifted over time to what we now have as cyber id.

  2. I believe it would be helpful to build up the definition of what constitutes a digital identity; there are so many aspects of identity (gender, religion, culture, sexuality, etc) that it would be helpful to define what all these mean and then research how the digital world affects or shapes these. I noticed that people already research certain topics, but I believe it would be useful to expand those definitions to include the specific aspects of identity we haven't talked about.
Furthermore, I can also see the value in researching about specific digital media (such as social media, advertising, TV shows, etc) and how they shape digital identity. I can see this being a huge field of study with valuable knowledge.

    1. Ivonne,

I agree with you, we should be able to know the defenitions that form digital identity.

    2. Ivonne,

I agree! We need to be able to delve deep into what identity is constituted of. To know a topic it is very important to know as much about its background as possible so that when studying/making inferences, we are able to have a better perspective.

    3. Ivonne,
I agree with you! We do have to build up our definition of digital identity because it is such a multi-faceted term. It would be helpful prove as much background as possible on the term.

    4. Yes! There’s so much to explore when it comes to digital identity. Since we all had a sub topic, I don’t think we delved much into any other parts of digital identity.

  3. In reading all the contributions, most of us believe the primary function of the website should be for users to read and utilize our research and entries for whatever their purposes should be.

Perhaps what's missing is an opportunity for users and the readership to contribute as well. There could be a space for the readership to contribute their own research, opinion, or dissensions. Of the three the last is arguably the most important.

I've found that disagreement is an essential part of the dialectic, and it may be the the anonymity of the digital sphere allows for collaborative learning between both contributors and readers.

  4. I believe that when building our site, we should include the digital identity safe. We all have brought up great ideas to our websites for different audiences which are good. But I feel that we need to add more about the how to keep everything that we do online safe from being hacked or encrypted. Another area that I would like to add is keeping the children safe from any predators.

    1. Elizabeth,

This is interesting! I completely forgot about online hackers! We should definitely be able to look into having our site safe from being encrypted and or hacked.

Also, if children were to use this page, it should have "parental guidance" as well as making sure that they are kept safe from child preds. Great ideas!

  5. Talking about social media so much. I think it would be very cool to provide links to twitter, Instagram, tumblr, Facebook, etc. accounts of individuals and groups that discuss identity and digital identity. By doing so, we would be promoting people and groups that are dedicating themselves to this research. Plus, it allows for our audience to stay connected and not just forget what we talked about after a week.

    1. It might be telling if we were to include a timer that measures how long users are able to focus on a particular aspect of our site before they felt inclined to rejoin a more social setting.

    2. That's a great idea, Rebecca! We need to stayed connected with our audience in order to build something meaningful.

    3. Definitely, Rebecca! Keeping the lines of communication open is vital to, as Karina eloquently stated, “to build something meaningful.”

  6. I think in the web design it is important to be as honest as possible with the feedback/responses of the users. I would also like to regulate the appropriateness in regards to the responses, due to audience being parents from an education community. I feel many times when there is freedom of feedback we (I included) will tend to vent and rant instead of producing a better outcome. This I feel, would easily happen with the web site if there is not guidance of mediator for the feedback.
I think the hacking like Elizabeth stated would also be something to add to the web site. Only because now with the stolen identity being so abundant, these student and parents could potential be at risk of developing problems such as state confidential scores, etc.

    1. I usually post without reading other classmates posts because I tend to forget what I want to add, but I think it’s crazy that we thought almost the same thing. It is extremely important for there to be a mediator because some individuals tend to just attack without knowing the whole context of something being shared. It is so easy to offend another person these days and having a mediator will lessen that chance for visitors to be rude.

    2. Michelle,

I really like the fact that you said feedback and that is one thing that it has not come to mind when it comes to identity in the digital world, and it is true many people do develop this sense of identity and improved identity from the feedback that they are being given directly or indirectly I can testify that I have been taking feedback from people in the web in an indirect manner such as reading and watching videos.

I do believe that we should promote that when it comes to developing that digital identity.

      Great Analysis Michelle!

  7. So I was thinking about our wiki page and I realized that maybe our website could be as informative as we want it to be, yet others researching into the abyss of digital identity should also add new information if it is available. Since we are located in such a remote place (everyone outside of the valley thinks San Antonio is the valley) I think it would be great if others contributed in ways we probably haven’t.
I also think that our website should have some sort of mediator since I would like for others to have the ability to add to our research, I think it’s important for someone to be facilitating or at least be making sure no nonsense is posted on an educational site.

    1. Sandie,

I do agree, and that was I was discussing in this thread that just like how we have vast information in the digital world so does the misinformation, so I really like the idea that people can contribute on the research so the topic can be more accurate. I think in the digital world we need to develop a culture of presenting correct information and frown upon those users who try to misinform, deceive, and scam people who are not educated in the manner.

      Great analysis Sandie!

  8. I feel that one factor that we could use in regards to designing a site and creating a digital identity for the user is by educating the user more. Of course, social media and entertainment is a big part of digital identity; however, those outlets of digital identity often do misinform the user. Just like in the world we should not believe everything we are told and to avoid these kind of scammers in the streets the same could be said in the digital world. Many people do misinform the public to gain something out of it, so I believe that just like awareness is being created in the world so does the digital world since there is a vast of opportunities to not only misinform people but to scam them. In addition, I do agree that the digital world is a great channel to gain information, and if you ask my opinion, I think it is the best form to access information, but we need to be educated on where and how to access that accurate information that not only contains credibility but contains hard data that is not made out of the blue.

Overall, digital identity is a great thing due to the easy accessibility but people do get affected negatively if they are misinformed. Moreover, I do believe that educating the public is essential so users can develop a healthy digital identity that would improve the quality of their lives.

    1. Erix,
Your last statement is key because I, too, feel educating the public about influences on digital identity, the way digital identity manifests itself, etc. can lead to positive outcomes for those who may not be well versed in this area. Many people develop a digital identity without really thinking about the digital footprint they are leaving (perhaps they feel safe/hidden behind a screen), so it is important to raise awareness and opportunities for others to become familiar with this topic because they may be able to make conscious changes to their digital identity.

  9. Providing real examples of each of our sub-areas would be beneficial to add. For example, my sub-area is digital identity through narrative. Perhaps, providing ways in which this notion is carried out in a classroom with images of real student work. For those with a gaming/avatar sub-area of focus, perhaps images of different video games that allow avatars to be created, and the process gamers take to create those avatars. For those with a LGTBQ sub-area of focus, a list advocacy blogs or resources for site-visitors to easily locate and refer to.
People are drawn to how this information pertains to their lives, so real world applications about digital identity may help visitors understand the material or apply it much more easily.
Rebecca had mentioned the importance of creating an interactive space for visitors to contribute to the varying aspects of a digital identity. We must value others’ views and utilize them to improve our website.

  10. Sorry for the late comment everyone!

The main areas I was thinking that we should work on would be that of organization. We have a lot of great topics and subtopics so I think a place to find the ones that have common ground would make it easier to locate and more user friendly.

My suggestion would be to develop a tap for the different areas of research and then have a few sub tabs that contain a small preface of what articles and information is in there. As of right now, we have everything jumbled up. So, we need to find a way to distinguish topics and areas of study within our research of Digital Identity.

  11. I think what our web design is missing is a category section. In order to have better organization and better access center we need to have an area where we can each separate our ideas and topics based on thematic units.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Categories or a table should be included as Sophia said. I think one major component, as I've said before, are all the journals read because of this course.

I don't think I fully understand identity or digital identity however, I'm closer because of the articles read. A resource that should be included along with a summary, besides the references of course.

  13. I agree we should have a category section. A category section can make it easy to nativigate between pages and back and forth. Some sites you can click on a link to get to where you need to go but there isnt always a way to go back. We should also include accessibility features. Research has shown me that on blogger and wordpress you can link to you tube videos that are captioned. I dont know if we can do this with wix. I wear hearing aids and even with my loudest ear phones I may miss some spoken words. So captions on videos help if we include videos.
